Your Backlog is too Big

The primary problem I see when working with scrum teams is that they have a very large backlog. The backlog is designed to have two or three sprints worth of work. Symptoms of having a large backlog:

  • Having large backlogs make it very hard to prioritize
  • Decreased visibility on the work ahead
  • Some items in the backlog have been there for years and may never be done   Some of the solutions are:
  • Delete everything (if something is important it will be re-added)
  • Use an icebox, basically a collection of cards that are grouped into epics that are not scheduled
